Psychotherapy

Dr. Davis is currently accepting new patients!

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a wide variety of conditions and challenges. It can help eliminate or reduce troubling symptoms so a person can function better and increase well-being and healing.

Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, dealing with a medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific behavioral health disorders like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy, and some may work better with specific conditions or issues. Psychotherapy may also be used in combination with medication or other therapies.

Therapy Sessions

Sessions are typically held once a week for around 50 minutes. Both the patient and therapist need to be actively involved in psychotherapy. The trust and relationship between a person and their therapist are essential to working together effectively and benefiting from psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy can be short-term (a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of therapy and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned together by the patient and therapist.

Teletherapy is when a client meets with a therapist through online technology. It is not much unlike face-to-face therapy in that you and the therapist can both see and hear each other in real-time over an internet connection using your computer or smartphone.

Is teletherapy effective?

Absolutely! Several studies have been conducted to determine how therapy can best be delivered remotely. Research has found that the most effective teletherapy approach is when services are delivered online in the same format as individual in-person sessions, which is what I offer.

Why do teletherapy and not meet in person?

Many individuals have found teletherapy to be a great fit. In today's current atmosphere with the pandemic, teletherapy provides a 100% safe way to attend therapy sessions with no possibility of exposure. Other reasons I've had clients mention have included simple convenience, not having to schedule their appointments around a busy work schedule, not having to spend time and money to travel the distance to our office, and more. Teletherapy has made it possible for me to provide therapy services to individuals from all over the state of Indiana, with neither the client nor myself having to travel. Some individuals prefer meeting online because they find it more comfortable to be able to do so in the comfort of their homes.

What technology do I need for teletherapy?

All you need is a smartphone or computer that has a webcam, speakers, and a microphone. These days, most smartphones, desktop computers, and laptop computers are equipped with all of these as part of their standard product. To ensure your confidentiality is protected, I must insist that you attend the session alone in a private, quiet room, away from excessive noise or where people may hear you in the session. I highly recommend using headphones or earbuds, as they keep our discussion private and cut down on background noise.

Is the technology HIPAA-compliant?

Absolutely! I wouldn't dream of using it if it wasn't! Protecting your confidentiality and providing a safe environment for therapy is my top priority.
